Complex Deliveries

The CELS simulation team assisted in providing a “just in time” simulation case to help intradisciplinary teams from OBGYN, NICU, and other specialty services prepare for a complex delivery.

Healthcare professionals from multiple disciplines may be present during a complex delivery:

  • Labor & Delivery Nurses
  • Neonatologists
  • Obstetricians & Gynecologists
  • Anesthesiologists
  • Neonatal Nurses
  • Surgical Specialists such as ENT

Ensuring the response readiness from these teams is an important aspect to proving excellent care to mother and baby, and UF CELS makes sure to include all necessary disciplines in our simulations. The simulation scenario is created to meet the specific objectives required to successfully manage this complex medical situation.

The pre-brief

It starts with a plan

A big part of these simulations is getting the team to work together cohesively. This is so in the actual high-stress, high acuity event goes smoothly.

In a real scenario, there may only be minutes to effectively act.

Some of the following complications can arise during delivery, which necessitate a high degree of cohesion and confidence in order to facilitate a successful delivery.

  • Airway complications
  • Breech presentation
  • Eclampsia
  • Hemorrhaging
  • Shoulder dystocia

Through our simulations, we foster a safe environment in which healthcare professionals still experience the stress of a real-time scenario.

Securing the airway

In this specific simulation, securing the airway of the neonate was an objective that mirrored the real-life importance of the scenario.

The CELS team modified a newborn simulator to enhance the realism of the scenario.

Surgical Intervention

Depending on the situation, surgical intervention is necessary for mom or for baby. In this specific scenario, surgical intervention was required for the baby.

Surgical intervention is variable, and as such UF CELS provides simulators to accompany a variety of scenarios.
