About OPTIMISE

Welcome to the OPTMISE Resource Center, a dedicated platform providing tools and information to improve emergency care for our most vulnerable patients

OPTIMISE (Obstetric and Pediatric Training Intervention to Mitigate Safety Events) is a collaborative initiative between UF Health Emergency Medicine and the UF College of Medicine, Center for Experiential Learning and Simulation (CELS). Supported by a grant from the Florida Medical Malpractice Joint Underwriting Association (FMMJUA). This project addresses the unique challenges of treating pediatric and obstetric emergencies in the Emergency Department (ED).

Collaboration in care

The ED is a high-pressure environment, characterized by diagnostic uncertainties and complex teamwork. Our project utilizes in situ simulation, which is a simulation exercise conducted directly within the actual clinical environment. Rather than focusing on individual performance, these simulations are designed to enhance interdisciplinary teamwork, improve decision-making, and uncover potential safety threats before they affect a patient.

Why OPTIMISE Matters

Research shows that 6-8.5% of emergency patients experience safety incidents, ranging from hidden vulnerabilities within the system that don’t reach the patient to errors that could cause harm. This is particularly concerning for low-frequency, high-risk pediatric and obstetric cases.

Educational Resources and Tools

This website serves as a hub for the OPTIMISE Simulation Toolkit, designed to empower healthcare facilities to implement high-quality training. Through a “train-the-trainer” model, we provide the resources necessary for local staff to become simulation facilitators

On this site, you will find access to:

  • Pre-designed Scenarios: Specialized simulation scripts for pediatric and obstetric emergencies.
  • Printable Checklists: Practical tools to ensure system readiness and patient safety.
  • Implementation Guides: Resources for scenario design, debriefing techniques, and logistical setup using basic, cost-effective equipment.

Our goal is to foster a community-driven approach that ensures every ED, regardless of its size or resources, is prepared to provide the highest standard of care for women and children.
