About Samsun Lampotang
My name is Samsun Lampotang, PhD, FSSH, FAIMBE, and I joined the UF Department of Anesthesiology as an assistant professor in 1993. I earned my PhD in mechanical engineering, as well as completed postdoctoral training, here at the University of Florida.
I now hold the Joachim S. Gravenstein Professorship of Anesthesiology and am the director of the Center for Safety, Simulation & Advanced Learning Technologies (CSSALT) at the University of Florida. I’m also a joint professor of urology and an affiliate professor in a number of other departments across the University of Florida.
My research interests are in simulation in healthcare, healthcare equipment, and the promotion of patient safety through enhancement of learning and improved equipment design. I have considerable experience in designing, building, and validating simulators for procedural interventions, including prostate biopsy and blocks. I innovate, build, evaluate, and teach using simulators and simulations to help clinicians enhance their skills and to understand and use existing resources more effectively.
I’ve worked with clinicians and researchers from many fields, including neurosurgery, computer science, surgery, and urology. I am the inventor or co-inventor on more than 40 patents, and have worked on inventions ranging from simulators to cooling football pads to medical ventilators and output monitors. In 2022, the Society for Technology in Anesthesia honored me with the Joachim S. Gravenstein award for lifetime achievement in the area of technology in anesthesia.
In my free time, I enjoy swimming, baking bread, and playing pétanque.
